Earth Day 2010 (www.oaklandearthday.com)

The numbers are impressive for our city’s largest community clean-up and beautification event - Oakland Earth Day. “Green it.” was definitely the theme of the day as 17 trees were planted on International Blvd, public gardens were spruced up, and more than 200 flowers were planted across the City. For the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, 4,088 enthusiastic volunteers brought a sense of ownership, commitment and pride to their communities. Volunteers received commemorative posters, pins and patches. 89 project sites covered the entire city.

No great job is ever done alone – a special THANK YOU to the 89 site coordinators for their leadership, recruitment of volunteers, picking up and returning tools.  Your experience and dedication helped with the quick removal of debris gathered. We are also grateful to Earth Day sponsors, California Waste Solutions, ClifBar, Oakland Parent Literacy Project and Alameda County Public Works Agency and to everyone who helped make Oakland Earth Day another successful event! Let’s look at how we did this year as compared to last year.

Clean it. Green it. Mean it.
