Winter Storm Report - April 5 - 12, 2006
Mr. Mayor, Madam City Administrator, and City Council Members,
Unseasonable springtime storms continue to bombard the Bay Area with wet weather. Since April 4th, 1.03 inches of rain fell in Oakland, pushing our percent of normal precipitation to 133% for the period July 1, 2005, through April 11, 2006, which is more than 2” over the same period last year (which was already a very wet year).
Call volume continued to be very light, with 19 total weather-related calls received over the two days, due in large part by the pro-active response by PWA to the storms.
Forecasters predict scattered showers on Thursday, with another chance of rain on Friday. Another storm front approaches Northern California on Saturday night with rain focused in the North Bay once again. The good news with this system is that it will be fairly fast moving. In extended forecast, models are hinting at a possible end to the wet pattern, with distinct drying by Monday and especially into Tuesday. If this is true, it would be our nicest stretch of fair weather so far this spring.
As rains persist, crews continue to inspect and clean inlets and storm drains in heavily affected areas; and to patrol and monitor the Lake Merritt area, the hills and other known hot-spots for any drainage-related issues in order to mitigate them before they become problems.

Location of Problem Areas
- 1365, 1375 and 1385 Alvarado Road – yellow-tagged by CEDA because of slide activity. CEDA and PWA continue to monitor the situation in consultation with Geotechnical consultants.
- Elverton Drive between Skyline and Thorndale remains closed to all traffic because of further erosion of the street due to recent storms.
Closure of the road to all traffic does not affect citizens’ ingress/egress to their private property. PWA Engineering staff has evaluated the situation and is working on a permanent repair.
- 105th Street Underpass on San Leandro Street remains closed due to mechanical problems with the pumping system. Permanent mechanical repairs scheduled to begin April 19.
