Spring Storm Report - April 15 - 16, 2006
Mr. Mayor, Madam City Administrator, and City Council Members,
Unseasonable wet weather continues in the Bay Area. Over the weekend, Oakland sustained 0.61 inches of rain, pushing our percent of normal precipitation to 138% for the period July 1, 2005, through April 16, 2006.
Call volume continued to be very light with six weather-related calls received over the two days.
Crews continue to inspect and clean inlets and storm drains in heavily affected areas, and to patrol and monitor the Lake Merritt area and hills for any drainage-related issues in order to mitigate them before they become problems. There were crews on standby for sandbag distribution, but there were no calls from citizens for sandbags.
The Call Center remained closed for the weekend.

Problem Areas
- CEDA staff red-tagged three houses Alvarado Road and one on Drury Court as a precautionary measure due to soil instability. Alvarado Road was closed Saturday afternoon and remains closed. PWA crews continue to monitor and clean storm drains to receive any runoff.
- Elverton Drive between Skyline and Thorndale remains closed to all traffic because of erosion of the street due to recent storms.
- Closure of the road to all traffic does not affect citizens’ ingress/egress to their private property. PWA Engineering staff has evaluated the situation and is working on a permanent repair.
- 105th Street Underpass on San Leandro Street remains closed due to mechanical problems with the pumping system. Repairs to the pump system begin Tuesday, April 18, and are expected to take three day to complete.
- 7th Street Underpass is closed because of a pump motor failure. PWA staff is expediting the shipment of a replacement motor and will begin repairs this week.

Now that the spring season seems to finally have arrived, we are bracing ourselves for a bumper crop of weeds this spring and summer. However, as the rainy season continues to wind down, our crews will continue to be engaged in pre-storming activities as we continue to experience rainy weather. I will keep you informed on any new developments, should they occur.
